The Swingset

Yesterday my family threw a surprise party for my oldest, our brand new Chief Petty Officer.

I promised myself I would not cry.

I cooked. A lot.

Hot and spicy chicken wings with blue cheese dip and meatballs in sauce with fresh basil, thyme and garlic.

Two whole beef tenderloins.

A huge green salad with all the fresh vegetables from my CSA share.

Salsa and guacamole.

Cheese platters.

Fruit trays.

A vegetable platter with ranch dip.

I was busy.

Then I stepped out onto their deck and saw the swingset that TBHITW and I had bought for the grandlittles this summer. My son and his wife had just bought a new house, with a big yard and it was our house warming present to them.

He would have climbed all over that thing with the girls.

But he never got to see it put together.

So I stood there and cried.

  1. Oh that's so sad; I'm glad you cried. Never hold back your tears. But know that he can see the girls playing on it.

  2. It is an awesome place for the children to play and it's OK to cry. That was one yummy list of goodies you prepared. A lot of my favorites. Take care my friend.

  3. You must have a large family to be doing all that cooking. Sounds delicious though. The swing set is deluxe and safe. I know your grandchildren will have many years of good times on it.

  4. Yep, times like that call for a good cry. I cried when I saw my son wearing stuff my brother got him (he didn't fit into it when Brian died) because Bri would have loved seeing him in it.

  6. A great gift indeed. I would've cried too....I'm sorry it made you sad now, but, someday, you will be able to enjoy looking at things like that and instead of making you cry, it will bring a gentle smile to your face with memories to enjoy for a lifetime....Hugs :-)

  7. And now I"m crying, but that's a good thing. Those memories will morph into things that make you laugh someday. But for now, cry.

  8. That was a lot of cooking! All sounds delicious, especially the wings and the meatballs. It's ok to cry about anything or everything, at a time like this. Sometimes I still do, too. Your grandlittles are so precious. Hugs, Marguerite

  9. Oh, honey. You'd have to be made of stone not to cry.
