The Good, The Bad and Margaritas

Lots of things were happening this weekend in my neck of the woods.

First the Bad News:

If you are a regular reader you know I visit NYC frequently. In fact, I was in NYC last Sunday, and the Wednesday before that too. Right there. In Times Square.

This is frightening to me. Truly frightening and disturbing. Frightening because someone wanted to KILL people. Innocent people. Disturbing because as the police were clearing Times Square, people were crowding the barriers and taking pictures. Have people learned nothing about personal safety? I mean, if I had been there I would have been running, YES RUNNING, in the other direction.

WTF on both counts. WTF to the deranged maniac who parked an SUV with a home made bomb in the middle of Times Square and WTF to the tourists who milled about waiting to see what was going to happen next. I just don't get it. Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm getting old.

Now the Good News:

No one was hurt and I wasn't there.

And TBHITW and I went to an Uno de Mayo Party on Saturday night. Yes, we know it's Cinco, but we are way to old to party on a work night.

Margaritas were plentiful and very, very good.

There are a lot of Margarita mixes on the market but if you want a really, really good one you have to make it yourself, from scratch. Both events of this past weekend called for a double batch. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

A Perfect Margarita: (makes one, but can easily be doubled, tripled, etc)

1 1/2 ounces Tequila
1/2 ounce triple sec or Cointreau if you are feeling rich
1 ounce lime juice

Pour all three ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice. Shake vigorously.
Slide a lime around the outer rim of your margarita glass. Dip the rim in salt (optional). Strain drink into glass.

Salud!

And where ever you are, be safe.

  1. the bomb scare is definitely scary but its a wake up call! NYers arent safe until the government beefs up our security. im so glad no one got hurt but i do hope that they take this serious and do something to prevent it!

yay for cinco de mayo! although im in no condition to even think about partying after my debauchery over the weekend!

  2. Mo - yeah Debauchery! The last 2 weeks I have pulled the cork on limits and now I'm back to healthy habits. Debauchery is good every once in while, especially when we are reminded just how fragile life is and how some A$$ hole with some dynamite could change our lives in a heartbeat.

    Cheers!

  3. I heard about the Times Square thing through Twitter. Scary stuff. Hopefully it was just a one-off nutter who's now been arrested...?

  4. My hubby used to make margaritas that way. We took big batches to the ballpark and served them up before the game. We older and wiser now...and we get headaches from margaritas. Sigh. Still love them.

  5. Uno de Mayo - classic! I think I'll start celebrating it too!

When will these idiots ever stop with their hatred? Such a waste of emotion. Such a waste of life.

Hey, this is so not fair. I click on your page of yummy foods and drinks, and there's a weight loss ad on your sidebar! As if!

  8. Rachel - the authorities made an arrest last night.

Blissed - HA! the stamina of youth. I had two margaritas over the course of 4 hours. I know my limits.

Ethelmae - Weight loss on MY sidebar - now that's just not right.

Whispering - I'm thankful for folks like you and your husband. Please thank him for his service to our country.

Eternally - Margaritas may be the answer to peace in this world!

  11. It is a nutty world that we live in. I remember 9/11. Some of my family was working in or close to the city and I was in NC. The phones were all messed up because of high volume of phone traffic. It was tough not knowing where everyone was.

  12. It is NOT because you're "old"!!! I would have been running with you... Maybe it's the very exaggerated sense of safety some folks have. All of this social networking is making the world careless about their own safety and only concerned about how cool their pics will look on facebook.

Margaritas!!!! I love the creamy strawberry ones... MMMM

  13. Definitely scary about the bomb scare! Thank God that no one was hurt!

Love that pic! Looks like a great time and love me a Margarita, cher! Cinco de Mayo, coming right up, here, week night or not! Cheers!

  14. Phoebe - you know, I never thought of that. You may just be onto something. People are so used to living every aspect of their lives in "public" they have a false sense of safety. Hmmm... Strawberry Margaritas? Now you're talking my language.

Marguerite - Hmm.. the husband is busy with work stuff, maybe I'll have to invite a few girls over and celebrate again, even though it is a Wednesday! You go girl!

  15. What a cute picture of you both! Hope you had a lovely time! AND SO VERY, VERY, VERY glad you were not in Times' Square at the time of the bomb scare!!! Let's celebrate safety...with a Margarita, of course ;-) ~Janine XO
